An authentic and historical teak wood merchant sailing vessel, this boat definitely has the most character of any Thailand liveaboard and has been used for several films including James Bond’s The Man With The Golden Gun and Swiss Family Robinson.

The Junk, as she is known in the local diving industry, has been redesigned interiorly to provide its guests with en-suite cabins, lots of on-deck relaxation space, and a large air-conditioned saloon to cool off in. It was originally built in Malaysia in 1962 as a merchant sailing vessel but was renovated into a classical yacht. Constructed mainly from hard teak wood called Takien Tong she’s 30 metres long and has 3 masts with a 330 square metres of sails.

The Junk’s itinerary includes 1 extra day’s diving so that you can also visit the more remote Surin Islands. Little visited by other cruises, these uncrowded islands are fantastic for macrolife as well as some marine life you won’t see in the Similans, such as bumphead parrotfish and black-tip reef sharks.

The divemasters have been diving in the Similan Islands for several years now and their enormous passion for scuba diving and the underwater world adds further to this special dive adventure. They pass their enthusiasm on to their guests, and the dive briefings are the most thorough that you’ll hear anywhere. If you haven’t dived in a while, a free buoyancy workshop can be arranged on board. And as experienced divers, you’ll love the freedom to dive for as long as you like, within safe diving limits of course.

MV Scuba Explorer

Liveaboard Diving

Steel Mono-Hulled Dive Boat…Price Standardised price indication based on daily rates, to allow easy comparison between productsCustomer Rating Star rating, based on our customers feedback
MV Scuba Explorer is an impressive looking Thailand liveaboard yacht that can comfortably accommodate up to 24 divers as it plies the waters of the Andaman Sea, taking in both the Similans and the southern sites of Hin Daeng and Hin Muang.

Length: 37 metres / 121 foot
Beam: 8 metres / 26 foot
Cruise: 12 knots
Divers: 24
Enriched air nitrox is available here
• Featured Trip ReportThe Thailand liveaboard, MV Scuba Explorer
At just under 37 metres in length, she is one of the largest steel-hulled liveaboards in Thailand. Despite being a large boat, most diving is done from the very spacious dive deck, although there are 2 dive tenders on hand when necessary. The Scuba Explorer is now also equipped with enriched air nitrox, so that suitably qualified divers can make use of this feature, very useful at some of the Thailand’s deeper dive sites.

As you might expect of a boat of this size, there is ample space on board and with 4 decks you can always find a spot to yourself. The large, air-conditioned saloon is where most guests spend their time enjoying the TV, DVD, music system, computer and extensive diving and reference library, well stocked in both English and Japanese.

Music fills the air on the Scuba Explorer since it is piped around the boat, even into your cabins where you have individual control so you can hit the mute button if you are not feeling the beats. There are 3 categories of cabin to choose from, the majority being on the middle deck and therefore commanding impressive views over the glinting ocean. Only the Master cabin (Suite) has en-suite facilities and it also boasts its own TV and DVD system, as well as views over the front and side of the boat.

The Scuba Explorer runs 4 night trips to the Similan Islands so if you are looking for a short Thailand liveaboard on a sturdy and impressive boat with excellent communal facilities then look no further.

All 7 cabins are air-conditioned and the boat features an extensive dive deck as well as full entertainment and safety facilities. With a capacity of only 14 divers, there are many boats larger than the MV Dive Race, however it feels like a bigger boat since there is always plenty of space, whether you’re in the shaded outdoor dining area, the air-conditioned saloon or on the sundeck.

With nitrox on board and with 7 crew and 3 dive masters, you can see why many consider the MV Dive Race to provide all the services and attention you would wish when diving around Thailand’s west coast, whether it’s around the Similan Islands, Hin Daeng or Phi Phi.

Guests tend to spend their time in the huge dining area where the meals served are a mixture of Thai and international cuisine, or for the sun lovers there is a large sundeck on the upper deck where you can work on your tan between dives.

Wooden Mono-Hull Liveaboard Motor Boat…Price Standardised price indication based on daily rates, to allow easy comparison between products
MV Oktavia is a 30 metre motor yacht that runs short Similans liveaboard diving trips. The standard trip is 4 nights but you can join for just 2 night stays if you book a speedboat transfer.

Length: 30 metres / 99 foot
Beam: 7 metres / 21 foot
Cruise: 8 knots
Divers: 24

On board there can be up to 24 guests enjoying the best dive sites of the Andaman Sea, being looked after by 14 crew members. Popular with young international divers, various languages are spoken on board this Phuket liveaboard.

The guests mix in the open air saloon and dining area on the upper deck and on the sun-deck which is partially shaded. Known for its fun and laid-back atmosphere, the Oktavia also functions well as a dive boat with nitrox available and a dive deck with rinse tanks and fresh water showers. A range of PADI dive courses are also available to be taken on board.

Cabins are mostly standard twin or double beds on the main deck with shared bathrooms, but there are 2 very large Master cabins on the upper deck which have en-suite bathrooms. MV Oktavia is not a luxury option but with plenty of comfortable seating space, a large sun deck, nitrox and more, it certainly has the features of a value-for-money Thailand diving cruise option within its price range.
